Serving the Baltic Region and Country Hub for Horizon SHORE
The European Blue Schools Network brings the ocean into the classroom, and Blue Baltic Ecosystem brings schools into the network.
MISSION: sign up 100 schools as new members and help them participate in the Open Call for funding.
Primary and secondary schools - public, private, alternative and others - that take up the Find the Blue challenge identify a topic that is relevant to the SHORE project for their students. The aim is to integrate ocean and water literacy into school curricula that makes the oceans, seas, lakes and rivers a relevant part of everyday life.
SHORE supports project-based learning that can lead toward student ownership, collaborations with other schools and organizations, governments and people towards creating a community imbued with the same passion and values the project holds. By successfully completing the "Find the Blue" Challenge, schools will receive a European Blue School certification, and their school project entered into the Find the Blue Schools competition for a 10.000EUR reward!
All certified schools become part of the Network of European Blue Schools, where teachers and students:
* become agents of change for ocean sustainability;
* share experiences with teachers and students from other schools;
* connect to the wider ocean & water literacy community.
By becoming involved with the European Blue School Network, teachers and pupils will improve their understanding of the ocean and develop a sense of responsibility towards our shared planet. Creating awareness and a feeling of responsibility for our ocean (so-called Ocean Literacy) encourages students to become more active and responsible European and global citizens. The program challenges schools to Find the Blue and explore their connections to the ocean while creating networks all across Europe.
The Network of European Blue Schools is an initiative of the European Commission, supported by DG MARE and developed by the EU4Ocean Coalition partners. The Blue Baltic Ecosystem Living Lab sponsors schools from throughout the EU become members of the network with the funding support from Horizon SHORE project, grant 101112815 in support of the EU Mission "Restore Our Ocean & Waters"
A 2020 Schoolnet Analysis of compulsory education found European school curricula reflected the general “ocean blindness” of society, that is the lack of awareness and understanding about the ocean's importance in mitigating the challenges posed by climate change. In order to respond to climate and biodiversity crises, several initiatives and networks about blue education have been launched to engage youth in ocean literacy to and inspire them to integrate bodies of water in their life, education and careers. BLUE ANEW developed the Ocean Literacy Guide (OLG) for primary and secondary-school aged children and adolescents as agile educational material, and accompanying teaching routes with related activities, to combat ocean blindness in compulsory-education classrooms as well as in non-formal learning environments such as museums, NGOs, acquariums and others. A series of video presentations are also available for primary and secondary-school aged learners about plastics pollution, water scarcity and food waste. Available at www.blueanewnet
